A 1950’s adventure!

The year is 1955. If you grew up in the 1950s and the 1960s, you may be among those who like to recall those good old “Happy Days” of television fame. Even younger generations enjoy watching the old TV reruns to get a peek into what life was like back then. In this short story, Shawn and Willie Daniels are off on a Saturday adventure in search of trash to turn into treasure. It was going to be a great day. Shawn was sure of it. No school and no bullies to remind him that he’s not one of the crowd. This is a story about bullies and what it’s like to be bullied. It may redefine your definition of bullying. If you were a child who was thought of as “different” in some way, you know what bullying is about: torment, persecution, intimidation, to name a few of its descriptors. For Shawn and Willie, their difference was based upon the social status of the dysfunctional family and the alcoholism and abject poverty in which they grew up.

  2. Good to see the veil has been lifted! Bullies are kids with nothing better to do with their lives and no sense! Had direct experience until enough was enough! Didn’t know my temper then (11 yrs. old). Never saw him again.
Thank you for writing this. It was needed. Eddie

    • Thanks for reading and for your comments. As a retired teacher, it is a subject near and dear to my heart. We need a lot of caring adults to really care about all of our kids, not just those who are mainstream and easy. One caring adult can make a tremendous difference in the life of a child. I hope that you get a chance to read PURE TRASH. If you would like to review it on your blog, just let me know and I’ll send you a pdf or ‘gift’ you a kindle copy from amazon. Happy writing and blogging!

  4. I love the cover. I think I might love the book too. Where in New England? Just being locally curious. There are some parts of New England every bit as isolated as Deliverance country and some of those places are downright scary.

    • Hi, Marilyn. Thanks so mujch for the note. Setting is rural NH. As we know, these bad things happen everywhere. Fortunately, there are a few good, caring people who can help the hurting and helpless make it through. Your comment helped to make my day! Happy writing and all of those other great things that you do, Bette

  6. Oh Bette! Good for you!! Bravo! Bravo! Please see this blog and note my comment, written just minutes before I saw your post. I gave your blog link to him! Good for you for doing this! Thank you. You can see I have strong feelings on the subject. One of my first clients was a high school boy, who stripped in gym and thrown into the hall, in a fetal ball naked, when the bell ringed. No action was taken. The pediatricians I worked with blamed the victim. For so long the bullied have had no voice. You are now part of the solution! Kudos~
