Winter's Last Hurrah POEM bas 2016 2Winter’s Last Hurrah
A poem of seasonal transition by Bette A. Stevens

First day of spring at the farmstead in Central Maine and more than migrating birds flutter about to entertain us. Snowflakes join the celebration. The flurry of Slate-colored Juncos and White-breasted Nuthatches (I managed to capture a snapshot of one at the feeder) don’t seem to mind at all.

Wonders of the seasons—they never cease to amaze us!

~ Bette A. Stevens, Maine author/illustrator

Here’s a little poem I thought of that makes me appreciate each day from a bird’s eye view:

    said a little bird
    step into my shoes
see the world from my view
high above the world so blue

    there’s much to glean
    from fields so green
see the world from my view
high above the world so blue

    • Thanks, Noelle. Goldfinches arrived today, bringing us golden rays as a promise on a gloomy day. The sun will come out tomorrow! Blessings & love 🙂 ❤

      • Our goldfinches aren’t here yet either – the thistle awaits them! Right now we have NO birds because our roof is being replaced and the noise is driving them away.

  5. Lovely poem and what a great photo – still winter eh! I’ve just come back from a beautiful albeit still wintery Sweden to the warm tenderness of Spring in the UK, delighting in daffodils, tulips and magnolias in full bloom. Such a colourful contrast. Enjoy your migrating birds. Warmest wishes to you.

    • Hi, Annika. Sounds like you’re already enjoying a sensational spring in the UK. Ours will arrive, too; just a matter of when. Despite today’s clouds and bluster, a myriad of songbirds are munching at the lilac tree whose leaf buds are ready to burst before long. Have a wonderful day, my friend! 🙂

  9. Beautiful poem, Bette. My daffodils made it through two snowfalls with more than 8 inches of snow. Just proves that spring cannot be deterred, once it begins.

    • Our daffodils are shouting–HURRY! Through snow, sleet and freezing rain, our golden spring blooms remain a reminder that patience does day off. Happy Spring! So glad you stopped by for a visit, Barbara. 🙂 ❤

  12. We had more juncos here this year than ever before, but our nuthatches didn’t come back. Maybe they’re still up north? The blueberries are budding and the knockout roses has new leaves, but it’s going to snow and go below freezing tonight and tomorrow night. I’ll cover what I can. The birds are filling up at our feeders now.

  16. I think our bird are thoroughly confused. I know I sure am. A week ago it was lovely and warm and sunny. Then it snowed. And snowed again. Got warmer. Rained. Rained even more. RAINED A LOT AND GOT COLDER. Tomorrow? Warmer and dry, but SNOW on Saturday. Gee whiz! And I was going to plant my seeds two weeks ago 🙂

    • It’s crazy up here too… We’re in flux and haven’t even thought about planting anything yet. Ten degrees on morning, forty the next. Wind, rain, sleet, or shine. It’s a coin toss! Hoping the shine wins out. Daffodils need a bit more of the bright shine, they’ve had plenty of rain and are several are ready to burst any day. Fields are greening slowly, but surely and the basement hasn’t flooded yet. Have a great weekend! 🙂 ❤

    • High winds and heavy rains here tonight! But, we were blessed when the snowstorm earlier in the week headed out to sea before it reached us. SPRING… I can hardly wait for its next surprise package! 🙂
