Wishing everyone a “Happy Mother’s Day” and sharing a poem written in 2014 to celebrate my beautiful mother on her birthday. ~Bette A. Stevens, Maine author/illustrator
It will be nine years ago on August 8, 2007, when I called Mama to wish her a Happy Birthday and, as usual, we talked for hours. It was the last birthday we got to ‘celebrate’ together. Mama left us for her heavenly home the following April and there hasn’t been a day since that I haven’t thought about her and missed her. Mama’s strength of character, her poise, wit and unconditional love live on within all those whose lives she touched. The photograph (circa 1951) of Mama and me was taken in California.
Happy Mother’s Day, Mama. I miss you.

Beautiful tribute to your beautiful mother. Easy to see where your poetic talent and good looks came from. There is no greater gift than a loving mother.

This is beautiful. My grandmother died the Christmas before last, and I considered a tribute to her, but I think I need a little more distance. I wrote a biography for her funeral, filled with my love and immediate loss, but I’d like to write something shorter, for those who didn’t know her. Your tribute is perfect. 🙂

Thanks so much, Cathleen. So sorry to hear about the loss of your grandmother. I’ve written a poem about one of my grandmothers, “Grandma’s Legacy.” Grandma was a pure gem. For me, writing about loved ones keeps them close. Blessings and love to you! ❤

What a beautiful poem and tribute to your mother. It is difficult to lose a parent and I still miss mine after 11 years (my mom) & 14 years (my dad). May you have a lovely day tomorrow. Your mom will be with you in spirit. Blessings & hugs!

I love this poem! I relate to it also. Losing my mom was the hardest loss I’ve ever experienced even though I knew that she was with God. I feel her around me too! Thank you, Bette! Where in Maine do you live? Do you know of an Island in Casco Bay called Chebeague? Just thought I’d ask.

Hi, Carol. Thanks so much for stopping by for a visit and for sharing your thoughts. I miss Mama every day, but know that she is also with God and that gives comfort. We live in Hartland (Central Maine) between Bangor and Augusta via I-95. I have heard of Chebeague Island, but have not been there. Do you live there or come from Maine? I believe that someone in our local Book Discussion Group mentioned that there is a book about the island. Now I want to find out more. Blessings, Bette 🙂
