Summer’s Last Song—Haiku by Bette A. Stevens Summer’s Last Song—Haiku by Bette A. Stevens

As summer draws to a close here at The Farmstead in Central Maine, the air feels crisper and days grow shorter; yet a few summer blooms remain to perform their last song as notes of autumn begin to appear in the background of the landscape, biding their time to take center stage. Oh, the wonders of the seasons.

Summer’s Last Song

Haiku by Bette A. Stevens

Serene autumn hymns

Play softly in the background

Of summer’s last song

  2. Lovely Haiku, Bette. Summer has given us a bonus these last few days and I’m not complaining but do love the backdrop of Autumn as we move forward. #SeniorSalon

  4. It is funny how each season has a sound of its own. I think of the sound of cicadas in the summer and the drone of bees in the fall.

Autumn is so very subtle here in Southern California, but I can still feel the shift in the air. Beautiful poem!

    • Thanks, Robin. I know that Southern CA feeling… We lived in Lancaster and then Lompoc during the 1990s. Nothing like the desert wind and the Pacific breezes. Hope you’re enjoying a beautiful almost autumn day, my friend! 🙂 xo

GREAT to have that back up again to make it easy to jump from blog to blog when we have a moment, isn’t it? I don’t always catch things as they whiz by in the Reader. I would have missed these lovely words otherwise. Thanks for sharing.

It just turned hot again here, so I am typing under a clip-on fan, once again yearning for crisp fall weather (regardless of any riot of color in the leaves).

    • Hi, Annika. Hard to believe, but summer is still singing here at The Farmstead. Temps have been in 70s and 80s and we’re yet to feel a frost… No complaints–we know what’s coming! 🙂 xo

  21. We went out this afternoon to shoot some autumn, but it’s late in coming. Usually by this time in September, there is some autumn out there, but today, not much. A tiny bit. Next week, I hope. It must be getting very autumny up your way 🙂

    • Most of the leaves are drab so far. Brighter in swampy areas. With such a dry summer this year, autumn leaf peepers may be disappointed if summer continues to sing much longer… 🙂 xo
