Winter Game

Haiku by Bette A. Stevens

A seasonal game

It has been a long, cold winter here at the Farmstead in Central Maine. Last week’s ice and wind storm left a perfect canvas for the sun to paint its magic on the living room window, inspiring me to write “Winter Game.”

What’s inspiring you this winter?

  3. Beautiful haiku, Bette. I’m inspired when there is a winter storm on the way (like today) and I don’t have to go anywhere. I love looking at a storm from the inside. I will do an errand this morning and then chill, watching the storm swirl outside my frosty window. I may do some writing, too!

    • Perfect way to spend a stormy winter day, Molly! 🙂 Woodpeckers, chickadees, blue jays and juncos spent a good part of the day filling up at the feeder. They so reminded me of shoppers rushing to the store before the storm hits. I spent a good part of the day reading from the sofa (not my usual spot) just so I could watch the birdies too. The world will be magical by morning…then the cleanup. Wouldn’t want to miss it! BUT, I can’t wait for spring to get sprung. Wishing you a week filled with wonders! xo

  6. What a lovely piece, Bette. Would you consider doing something for my newsletter in March? Something for the Author’s Pen for spring?

  7. Fabulous, Bette. We’ve had a lot of bitter cold and “frozen” days here as well. It is nice to see the sun struggling through. Your photo and haiku captured the seasonal dance beautifully!

  8. Bette, this is a gem of a haiku, playful and delightful! 😀 The photo is beautiful but slightly scary at how cold it must be for icicles to form on the window! Great shot of it with the sun in the corner. Keep warm and safe…Spring is on the way…soon, we can hope! hugs xxx

  9. Beautiful, Bette. I had forgotten how our windows iced up in New England. It doesn’t happen here. But I did enjoy the peace and clean of our snow fall a couple of weeks ago. Now that I’m retired, I don;t have to worry about school closings, work closings and snow suits!

  16. That is profound Bette, I love the simplicity but powerful impact of your words! You have such a gift with poetry.

It is our summer here…it has been a strange one with heat waves & now a month early autumn cold!

But what has inspired me this summer is our Jacaranda tree, as written in my Maple tree post. And our pink frangipani tree has also blossomed with posies of fragrant frangipani’s. Such a gift.

    • Thanks so much for your kind and thoughtful note, Jennifer. Your Jacaranda tree is glorious and I’ve so enjoyed your posts. Our autumn, was unusually warm and lengthy this year with no complaints from most of us in New England. However, it seems that we’re paying the price this winter. It is wonderful to be able to enjoy and share a love of nature’s gifts across the miles. ❤ Blessings and love… Bette
