Anyone who knows me, knows that I am an avid reader as well as a writer. I tend to pick authors that I enjoy and read their entire body of work in chronological order. This not only brings me enjoyment, but it shows me their development as an author from their early to contemporary work.

One of my favorite authors is Stephen King. His early work is strong and definitely got stronger. When he suffered his accident and nearly died, his work suffered a bit after his recovery. He even threatened to retire, but thankfully, did not. I use him as an example because he also has one of my favorite quotes by an author:

If you don’t have time to read, you don’t have the time — or the tools — to write. Simple as that. – Stephen King

    As a writer I have to confess that I love reading more. Might be why I’m always behind in my writing. I get a good feeling from writing something i know is well done but reading is fun and relaxing.

    To find time to read is something I struggle with while busy on my own work in progress, but I take every opportunity to do so. When I go anywhere, I have my current read with me and take advantage of any moment where I have to wait for something, whether in a doctor’s office, in line somewhere, or waiting for someone. I also read after dinner just to relax from the day.

    To me, reading someone else’s work is just as important as reading all those how-to-be-a-writer books. First hand experience. Whether the book you’re reading is well-written or not, you can always learn from it. Lessons in how to do it or how not to do it.

    Thank you for that post Bette, this is true, as writers it does get difficult to have time to read the books we enjoy especially as bloggers with weekly posts & joining blog parties. We read many posts in the course of the week!

I’ve just started reading The Stranger in the Woods by Michael Finkel, our June library book club read, in addition to a poetry collection.You’re sure right about the amount of reading we do each week as blogger buddies as well.     I set aside reading time (one-two hours) each evening during the work-week and on the weekends. I usually read a little of two-three books at a time: non-fiction, fiction, and poetry. I’m old school: I prefer to read print books.

    I TRY to make time to read, but it keeps getting harder. Stuff has to be taken care of it always takes hours longer than it should. I’m in the middle of “The Outsider” and I would REALLY like to finish it!

      Just finished Nomadland, Surviving America in the Twenty-first Century by Jessica Bruder–quite an eyeopener! Picked up The Stranger in the Woods by Michael Finkel. Both local book club reads. On my kindle finished a poetry and short story collection by Beem Weeks a few days ago. Will start on a new book tonight. 🙂 I like to read print copies during the day and eBooks at night.
