A writer inspired by nature and human nature

Enjoying another snow day at the farmstead in central Maine. This haiku is from my current work in progressMY MAINE, Haiku Through the Seasonsa poetry collection schedule to be released early in 2019. The photo of field and forest (taken from the back patio at the farmstead) inspired me to write today’s featured haiku. “Snowfalls” is a verse from the WINTER TALES section. Wherever you are, whatever the season, I invite you to get outdoors and get inspired. Join the fun and write a seasonal haiku about what’s inspiring you. It’s easy as 1-2-3… You’ll find the definition and descriptive details of writing haiku below. If the kids are around, make it a family affair—they’ll love it!

SNOWFALLS

Silently—snowfalls

Reign over field and forest

Supremely sovereign

~Bette A. Stevens

  17. It’s interesting how intimidating haikus can be to some. Even my creative writing students cringe when I suggest we work on some, and yet, they’re so delightful once we urge ourselves to lose all the extra words, and just go 5-7-5. Love yours here, Bette.
    Outside my front door
The oak stands firm and joyful

    • Thanks so much for your thoughtful note and lovely haiku share, Pamela… When I was teaching (grades 4-8) haiku creations were always a favorite–telling a story in three little lines and sharing them… oh how we all love that. ❤ May your winter be filled with wonders!

  21. Bette, my heart soars from the beauty of your haiku and photo. No wonder with such majestic landscape you feel it is ‘supremely sovereign’! Here dull grey damp rain reigns … can’t wait for frost and snow – then I’m happily outside! Wishing you a lovely second advent this weekend, my friend! ❤️

    • Thanks so much for your lovely words of encouragement, Annika. ❤ There is nothing quite as magical as watching each new snowfall as it renews the landscape and freshens our perspective. Looks like we're in for a long, cold, snowy winter this year… I love snowshoeing through our woodland trails on sunny days, but so look forward to spring's renewal too. Wishing you a winter filled with wonders, dear friend. xo
