Compassion is a Beautiful Thing…

Compassion in life
Is a beautiful thing

Sharing its beauty
Gives others their wings

Stirring love into each
Little thing that we do
Is sure to help their dreams
And our dreams come true

© Bette A. Stevens, Maine author

Compassion in life is a beautiful thing. But exactly what is compassion? I’ve always thought of compassion as “love in action.” After writing the poem Compassion is a Beautiful Thing…, I searched Google for a definition to share. The synonyms fit perfectly into my preconceived notion for the poem because they not only include love and mercy, each synonym requires action—stirring—on our part to metamorphose the idea of compassion into the reality of compassion.

Google Search:

noun: compassion; plural noun: compassions

sympathetic pity and concern for the sufferings or misfortunes of others.

“The victims should be treated with compassion.”

synonyms: pity, sympathy, empathy, fellow feeling, care, concern, solicitude, sensitivity, warmth, love, tenderness, mercy, leniency, tolerance, kindness, humanity, charity

“Have you no compassion for a fellow human being?”

antonyms: indifference, cruelty

Origin Middle English: via Old French from ecclesiastical Latin compassio(n-), from compati ‘suffer with.’

May compassion reign in our hearts and hands each day. ~ Bette A. Stevens

  1. Discerning thoughts and a lovely poem, Bette. Compassion is much needed in the world and the toughest challenge may be compassion with people whose beliefs differ greatly with our own.

  2. A beautiful poem.
Compassion is a feeling of humanity, it connects us back to our inner self.
Anytime we sense a rush of compassion towards someone, it just reminds us our inner sweet self is still alive.

    • Thanks so much for your lovely note, Erica. The monarch butterfly pictured was feeding on milkweed in my garden. I’m an advocate for monarchs (a near-endangered species) and report my sightings to Journey North each year. The first monarchs leaving their over-wintering ground in Mexico usually reach central Maine in early June! They are amazing! You’ll find out more about them on tabs at the top of my web page. So glad you stopped by for a visit!

    Until we meet again……

May flowers always line your path
    and sunshine light your way,
    May songbirds serenade your
    every step along the way,
May a rainbow run beside you
in a sky that’s always blue,
And may happiness fill your heart
each day your whole life through.
May the sun shine all day long
Everything go right, nothing go wrong
May those you love bring love back to you
And may all the wishes you wish come true
May the dreams you hold dearest

    May the kindness you spread
    Keep returning to you
