Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ HAPPY EARTH DAY…
Please share this post…
Monarch butterflies are a threatened species. The Center for Biological Diversity and the Center for Food Safety filed a legal petition requesting Endangered Species Act protection for the monarch and its habitat. Yet these butterflies, once a familiar sight, are plummeting toward extinction due to landscape-scale threats from pesticides, development and global climate change. That’s why the Center is working hard to win them protection under the U.S. Endangered Species Act.
AMAZING MATILDA written and illustrated by Maine author Bette A. Stevens ONLY 99¢/p thru April 24:
“Award-winning picture book adventure follows a monarch butterfly through her life cycle and teaches kids important life lessons along the way!”
About the book
AMAZING MATILDA (Ages 5-11 + grownups love it too) Friendship, patience and persistence are among the lessons learned in this gem of a tale featuring an amazing monarch butterfly. This award-winning picture book adventure follows the monarch’s life cycle as Matilda embarks on a quest to make her dream of flying come true. Matilda emerges from her egg on a milkweed leaf, she stretches and yawns and wants to fly. Sparrow tells her to follow her dreams. Toad and Rabbit laugh at a creature without wings who wants to fly. You’ll be as amazed as Toad and Rabbit, as you follow Matilda from egg to imago.
Review Excerpt Blurb:
“Matilda crunched and munched and lunched, leaf after leaf, day after day.”

Belated Earth Day, Bette. I’ll get the paperback to read to my granddaughter. She’ll love it. We only have one Monarch here but it visits my neighbors butterfly bush. I bought it last year but it’s still young. I like to plant more flowers attracting butterflies.

When we moved to this house 13 years ago, Monarchs feeding on the milkweed were a common site. I’m sad to say, that is no longer the case. 😦 Thank you for posting this, Bette, and creating awareness.

The disappearance of your monarchs is sad, indeed… 🦋 Ours keep coming back, but some years are better than others. It’s encouraging that citizens, regions and community groups are lending a hand by planting milkweed and providing waystations for our amazing migrating monarchs. I hope they return to your area soon. Thanks so much for stopping by and for your support, Mark. Have a lovely weekend! 🙂

Bette, A perfect post for Earth Day and for every day. Unfortunately, I don’t think I have seen a Monarch butterfly in our area for many years. Wonderful reviews! I have put “Amazing Matilda” on my list.

Happy Earth Day to you!!.. hope all is well in your part of the universe and life is all that you wish for it to be!.. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Matilda and have often wondered whether I will be able to read more adventures of Matilda, Grasshopper and the rest of their friends (hint, hint, hint.. 🙂 )….
Until we meet again…
May flowers always line your path
and sunshine light your way,
May songbirds serenade your
every step along the way,
May a rainbow run beside you
in a sky that’s always blue,
And may happiness fill your heart
each day your whole life through.
May the sun shine all day long
Everything go right, nothing go wrong
May those you love bring love back to you
And may all the wishes you wish come true

Thanks so much for your lovely note of support, Larry. Matilda’s continuing adventures? Perhaps a rhyming story… Meanwhile, I’ve a few other writing projects in the works. Earth Day/Month is a perfect time to remind readers of the plight of all of our amazing pollinators. 🦋 Blessings, my friend.

I know that butterfly numbers have trended lower for the last few years. I think it is another one of those things about climate change that many people don’t notice. Thanks for pointing it out.
By the way, I left a review recently for Dog Bone Soup on Amazon and Goodreads. Don’t know if you saw it? I sure enjoyed that one.

Hi, Pete. Ever thanks for stopping by to check out Matilda and for your read/review of Dog Bone Soup! Your note and review made my day! 🦋 As for the monarch, I grow milkweed in my gardens and report all of my sightings go Journey North. Sometimes I’m lucky enough to see one or more of our amazing monarchs emerge from their chrysalides–now that is amazing! Many regions of our country, civic organizations and individual citizens are getting involved and that’s a great thing. Hanging on to hope for the Monarchs and for Humankind! ❤ Stay safe and well, my friend.

I wish I could get milkweed to grow here, but we just don’t have enough sun. These days, we don’t seem to have any sun at all. It’s all rain and cold wind. I’ve tried three times to grow it, but it won’t grow. If it stops raining (ever) and I can clean out my front garden, I MIGHT get it to grow there … but I can’t even think about planting anything until the beginning of May. It’s just too cold.

Same weather here, Marilyn… Leaf buds are usually ready to burst this time of year, but tiny buds still have quite a ways to go. I’ve had the wood stove blazing every day. Dan’t started some vegetable seeds out in the barn’s sunny window, but nothing has sprouted yet. We need a warm-up and sunshiny days. 🙂 Stay warm and safe and take good care of you! xo

Great post, Bette. I’ve loved Monarchs since I was a small girl and used to walk through the milk weed patch on the way to school.

Thanks, Denise! 🦋 We lived in northern California when I was young and I used to catch monarchs, put them in a “Best Foods” mayo jar (Hellman’s here). Mom punched holes in lid and I let them fly off around dinner time. I did thee “catch & release” for other butterflies too, but monarchs were always my favorites! So glad you stopped by to share your monarch memories… xo

I did the catch and release, too in the mayo jar of a coffee can. xo

I am too, Diana! Last year I watched Max (large black dots on back wings) and Matilda emerge from their chrysalides–amazing. The year before it was 2 males and 3 females and that was the first year I spotted them as they spun chrysalises on our porch siding. Sighted more monarchs last year than the year before, but I was outside more. 🦋🦋🦋🦋Oh, the wonder of them all! xoxoxo

How wonderful that you actually can watch that miracle, Bette. I tried planting milkweed last year, but it didn’t take well. I have to get an Oregon variety and grow it in starts first, then transplant. That’s on my lockdown to-do list. 🙂

I just received your amazing book on my Kindle. Yes, it’s perfect for Earth Day. Now I wonder how you succeeded in posting the unusual symbol (in front of “Monarch”) into your title. Cut and paste?
At the moment, I have two of your books on my Kindle. I’m sure I’ll post a review for at least one of them. Thanks, Bette!
