A writer inspired by nature and human nature

BAS Author logo stamp 2015I am a writer inspired by nature and human nature.

I love people, nature, art, music and literature.

I advocate for kids and families, childhood literacy and for the protection of monarch butterflies and their threatened habitat in my books, my poetry and on my blog. My blog supports Indie and traditional authors, features great books and poetry and provides tips for writers and readers as well. Be sure to check out the tabs at the top of my blog and leave a comment or two. Thanks so much for stopping by for a visit. I look forward to chatting with you. — Bette A. Stevens

Brief Bio: Stevens is a retired elementary and middle school teacher, a wife, mother of two and grandmother of five. Stevens lives in Central Maine with her husband on their 37-acre farmstead where she enjoys writing, gardening, walking and reveling in the beauty of nature. She advocates for children and families, for childhood literacy and for the conservation of monarch butterflies—an endangered species (and milkweed, the only plant that monarch caterpillars will eat).

Stevens is the author of AMAZING MATILDA, an award-winning picture book; The Tangram Zoo and Word Puzzles Too!, a home/school resource incorporating hands-on math and writing; and PURE TRASH, the short story prequel to her début novel, DOG BONE SOUP, a Boomer’s coming of age novel published in January 2015.

BOOK BLURBS:

DOG BONE SOUP is not only a fabulous title for a novel, it’s also the staple diet of the young hero, Shawn Daniels . But it takes more than an impoverished family life, exacerbated by a drunken father, to keep our Shawn and his brothers and sisters down.”

PURE TRASH is an emotional and soul-searching short story read. Compassion is a beautiful thing.”

Inspire the kids with AMAZING MATILDA, an award-winning Monarch Butterfly picture book adventure! (ages 4-11)

  8. this relatively new blogger, writer and poet sincerely thanks you for liking some of my work on 20 Lines, the encouragement means a lot to me. and how wonderful for you to have written a children’s book, my wife wants to also. i will have to send her to your blog for some much needed insight.

    ::::merci::::and keep the light.

  9. hi Bette

i read several of your wonderfully lyrical poems (i could read them forever, by the way) and wanted to like and comment but could not, for some reason. the title links didn’t function for me, am i doing something wrong?

and thank you so much for liking so much of my work, your encouragement really pushes me along. enjoy your weekend.

    • You’re so thoughtful… You just make my day! I’ve posted them all on a Page for now. Since I’m a newbie with all of this tech, one of these days I’ll figure out how to fix this faux pas… Have a great weekend. Bette

      • well, you’re alone in that Bette, i had quite the steep learning curve when i got to WordPress too.

try clicking on Widgets, it will be a drop down when you hover your mouse over your blog name on the taskbar, at the very top of your blog. there is a Widget for Categories. drag the widget with your mouse, drop it wherever you want and name it Poetry.

you might try posting a poem in a template like you do your front page, tag it ‘Poetry’, and if you don’t want it to post on your ‘current’ front page, i think you can backdate it. there is a date function on every New Post template, it should be on the left side just below the text box.

our blog designs are different but the customization functions should be similar. anyway, it might be worth a little playing around.

hope this helps a little, thank you again and don’t hesitate to ask if you have any questions. have a wonderful weekend!

      • Thanks for the tip. Will play around with this out SOON… You’re awesome!

      • Don’t feel like the Lone Ranger with tech, Bette. I have an early computer background that is NO help at all with the newer tech stuff. I spend many hours feeling like a Luddite when I read what seems apparent and easy-peasy to all but me (like how to make my Kindle work, or to get a photo from iPhone to blog.)

I yearn especially for the days when all phones worked alike and I never had to ask for help simply to hang up after a call on a borrowed cell. I doubt that anyone has WordPress knocked, however. About the time we figure out how to do something they “improve” it! 🙂

  31. Hey, Bette, you’re the first Maine author I’ve encountered in this blogging journey. Are we rare, or am I just unobservant?

Wow, a 37-acre farmstead! Sounds exciting, although Maine would probably be too cold for me. I live in the desert of Arizona, so I’m used to HOT. 😉 Thanks for linking up with Literacy Musing Mondays!

    • Hi, Brandi! Thanks for checking out my link and stopping by for a visit. I never fail to find great posts to read and share on Literacy Musing Mondays linkup. For us, Maine is a great place to retire and there’s never a dull moment here at the Farmstead. We’ve lived in NY, CA, VA & ME and have traveled across the country many times. Arizona, like each unique region of our country, abounds with beauty. By January, I’ll probably be wishing I was there to enjoy some of your soothing HEAT. Blessings and love! ~ Bette

  36. I’ve only seen Monarch butterflies on TV, but they look beautiful – I imagine they’re even more stunning in the flesh. It’s worrying that their future is so precarious.
Thank you for following me and the storyhounds! 🙂

    • Monarch wings shimmer like a magnificent stained glass window…they are truly amazing creatures. They are considered an indicator species, symbolizing the fragility of our environment. Thanks for following my blog and stopping by to chat, Annabelle. I’m so glad that we’ve connected and look forward to following your journey! (͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ

  37. You are a woman with a sense of humor. Thanks for the like for my blog today.

  38. Almost April and the struggle between winter and spring continues. I see Maine has snow and it is predicted here as well in Upstate New York. Happy writing.

    • Another storm on its way tonight and into tomorrow (April 1), but we’re only expecting 1-3″ here in Central Maine. Still have a foot or more on the ground. It’s been some cold and snowy winter for us as I know it’s been for you too. I was born in Suffren, NY and Dan & I lived in Stony Point, Phillipsport and Ellenville before moving to Maine in 1974. Enjoy your weekend and we’ll pray for spring to really get sprung for the Northeast! 🙂 xo

      • By now, we should be used to it. Every year, it seems to hold a firm grip on winter. Soon, however, it will have be let go and allow spring. Have a great weekend.

  39. The reading in the video brought back an early memory of being a young child – maybe first or second grade – when, after lunch, we all laid down on mats and our teacher would read to us. This charming story wasn’t available back then, of course, but I know today’s lucky children are making lifetime memories similar to my own with many teachers reading all about Matilda. Thanks for sharing.
