A writer inspired by nature and human nature

Whenever we need a respite from the doldrums, Maine’s coast is calling…and no matter the season, Belfast, Maine is always a relaxing, scenic 45-minute drive from our 37-acre farmstead in Central Maine. The photo inspiring the haiku Respite for the Soul was taken at Moose Point State Park in Searsport, Maine. Photo collage below is from our latest visit to the nearby town of Belfast. Hope you enjoy the haiku and our visit to two of Maine’s  coastal towns too! ~Bette A. Stevens, Maine author

Beautiful photos, Bette! I love Maine! I have visited many times since I was a child. Can’t get enough of its beautiful coastline, and lobsters to eat! Didn’t get there this year but definitely will next year! Maybe we can meet somewhere then. 🤗 😘

So beautiful – and peaceful. But suddenly the weather has snapped, and I bet it’s COLD there too!

Very COLD and getting COLDER indeed, Pamela…expecting high winds, single digits and possible snow flurries tomorrow. Fortunately we have a wood stove to keep us warm if we lose power and plenty of books to read too. 🙂 Stay warm and have a lovely week! ❤ xo

A lovely haiku, Bette. Belfast is gorgeous! We went through Belfast on our way from Bangor back to Portland a few years ago. Maine is spectacular! Each area we visited was more beautiful than the last. ❤❤❤

Bette, a beautiful haiku and photographs! The area looks so serene and beautiful, the top photo is perfectly framed – I just want to be on that boat sailing away…Oh, ocean waves are the perfect tonic and respite for the soul. It’s always strange to read town names I know so well and I’ve been many times to Belfast, Northern Ireland…wish I could visit yours someday! xx❤️

I haven’t spent nearly enough time in Maine – always “on my list” to return for much longer when I lived in Manhattan, but a sudden move away from the East Coast scuttled that particular ship. I ache to return. BEAUTIFUL photos and the haiku expresses my sentiments perfectly.

Thank you, Madelyn. So happy to hear that you had a chance to visit our beautiful Maine coast, if only briefly. I was born in NY and lived in Rockland County during my teens and early twenties. We always managed to make a yearly trek to NYC to see the sites or take in a play. Every area of of land holds handsome treasures… Have a beautiful day enjoying our landscape of your realm! ❤ xo

But the lobster! Don’t forget the lobster. I have a photo of an ex-beau and I sitting on a restaurant patio in Maine, overlooking the most gorgeous rocky coastal view and eating the best lobster I’ve ever had in my life!

lol – Cincinnati chili can’t really compete with that! But I get your point, and it is well-taken.

Stephen King writes a lot about Maine. I have always wanted to visit.

We’ve traveled across the US six times and lived in New York, California and Virginia during the 1990s and early 2000s, but Maine will always be home and I adore the rugged and rocky coast. Stephen King lives in Bangor, which is only a 45 minute drive from us. We’ve driven past his home there several times, but have not met him. If you don’t have a copy of his book (memoir with great writing tips) ON WRITING, be sure to check it out, Robbie. 🙂 Happy reading, writing and enjoying the glory of the landscape around you! xo

I love Maine. Mountains and coast. Always have. If it wasn’t EVEN colder than Massachusetts, we’d probably live there 🙂

I know just what you mean about the COLD…and it’s coming! We’ve had several frosts, but this fall has been unusually warm and we’re not complaining. Wishing for a warmer than usual winter too…but as Grandma always said, “If wishes were horses, beggars would ride!” Even so, we’re glad to be retired–don’t have to go out in the storms and I have plenty of time to catch up on reading. 🙂 xo
