A writer inspired by nature and human nature

After three glorious days of 40 degree temperatures, the snow pack in the fields and front yard is beginning to melt at the farmstead in Central Maine. In fact, this was the first day I didn’t have to don ice cleats to walk safely down the driveway to the mailbox—the sun was shining and nary a cloud in the sky. By late afternoon the sky was telling another story. What stories are the skies telling you? ~Bette A. Stevens, Maine author

Here’s my latest haiku. See if you can write one too!

Sky Stories

Tales of winter’s end
Peek through darkening shadows
Spring’s silver linings

  1. Thanks to the Senior Salon I’m getting to meet you here. I love the haiku and remember exploring the form with 4th graders many years ago.

I live in Florida and have heard reports of snow in the northeast where my sister lives. You are right though, spring is waiting to burst forth under that mantle of snow.

    • HI, Marian. Thanks so much for stopping by for a visit. We’ve more snow on the way, but it surely can’t stay…spring, blessed spring will soon find its way. 🙂 Enjoy your warm spring day. It’s great to be connected, my new friend.

  2. This is a lovely haiku, Bette, and rich in imagery. Our weather is having second thoughts about bouncing into to spring. We are back to cold, grey, with a chance of snow. We don’t get many beautiful snows such as you have. Ours tend to be just a couple of inches over ice. Crazy weather! I’m counting down to spring! Much love and hugs, dear friend.

    • Thank you, dear Michelle. We’re in count-down mode too. Even in the midst of another Nor’easter promising a foot or more of snow today, we know that spring is in the wings waiting to return. <3 Have a lovely week! xo

  3. I always enjoy your haiku! Thanks for sharing it at Booknificent Thursday on Mommynificent.com!

  4. Lovely, Bette. Hopeful;, and then I read about the snow tornado. Are you OK?

    • Thank you, Noelle. Fortunately, no snow tornado here… Winds have been wild for several days, but we’ve still got power and the snow pack is slowly shrinking. Maybe that’s a good sign that mud season will be short. We’re in that change of seasons mode. 🙂 Have a beautiful week! <3 xo

  5. This is beautiful. Thank you for becoming my 400th follower and helping me reach today’s goal!

  6. I guess I can’t move to Maine! I’m cold and it’s 60 here in California.

  7. That is a lovely haiku. 🙂

  8. I really enjoyed your haiku, Bette. I hope your weather eases soon.

  9. AUTUMN CHANGES
    Nights foretelling,
    Crispy cold,
    Comfy rest.

How did I go Bette? My first ever Haiku!
    ♥ Jennifer

  10. Love the haiku. Is anything more hopeful than March? Here in my corner of northern California, according to the daffodils, spring is definitely arrived, even if we did get a little snow last week. Glad to hear it’s warming up where you are, too. 🙂

  11. Let’s hear it for the silver of Spring!

  12. Beautiful haiku, Bette! You saw my last post with my weather haiku, and luckily, no flooding for us. Have a lovely weekend, and spring will arrive before we know it. 💕🌼🌻

  13. Brilliant haiku, Bette. Spring is on its way – with silver linings, of course.

  14. It’s March, Bette. Spring is on its way. Lovely haiku. 🙂

  15. I see spring peeking this haiku, Bette. And in the beautiful photo. Hope for winter’s end!

  16. That’s a beautiful haiku, Bette. I had to look up ice cleats. We have no need for them here. 🙂

    • A world without ice cleats… that sounds heavenly right now, Norah! 🙂 Have a lovely weekend, my friend. xo

      • Sometimes in the heat and humidity of our summers, I wish for ice cleats! My weekend was fun, thanks, Bette. I hope yours was too.

  17. Ein schönes Wochenende. Wolfgang

  18. Bette, I love the idea of Spring’s silver linings! A lovely haiku welcoming the signs of the new season! The morning sky here is a uniform quiet white whilst the howling wind is saying to stay warm indoors! Happy Weekend and enjoy the warmer weather! Xxx

    • Thanks, Annika. Hope you’re enjoying a little warm up over the weekend. 🙂 Skies are grey here today, but snow pack continues to melt. It’s March and mud season’s not far away. xo

  19. That’s beautiful haiku, Bette! We have to get over the upcoming snow/rain storm before hoping for spring. We need the rain to ease the drought in CA, so I’m prepared for the rain.

  20. You write such lovely haikus, Bette! Thank you for sharing, my friend! 💕 xx

  21. Lovely, Bette! So tranquil and soothing.
We’re enjoying unseasonably warm temperatures here in Ontario, Canada. I love it. 🙂
Wishing you a beautiful weekend. XO

  22. This is a brilliant one Bette! How eagerly we all wait for the spring 🙂

  23. I love the thought of darkening shadows contrasted by silver linings. Beautiful, Bette!

Thanks so much for stopping by to join the conversation.
