My upcoming collection of haiku reflects the Maine I know and love. Here is a sampling of several stanzas from the section Autumn Leaves. I hope you enjoy them and would appreciate your comments. I plan to have the entire collection edited, formatted and published before year’s end. ~Bette A. Stevens, Maine author
Autumn Leaves
(Selected samples from MY MAINE, Haiku Through the Seasons by Bette A. Stevens)
Washed across woodlands
Blazing brush transforms the world
Into a canvas
Church steeples flashing
Like beacons across mural
Of the Master’s hand
Climb to the summit
Ascending steep timbered trails
Foliage at peak
Crispy, crunchy leaves
Frolic in the wind
Carnival classics
Skycastle ensigns—
Clever couriers announce
The coming tempest
Harvesting, mulching
Gardener’s work never done
But oh, the rewards
Cinnamon, nutmeg
Pumpkin confections abound
Connoisseur’s delight
Window panes clatter
Leaves scatter in the whirlwind
Green fields turned umber
Drifting off to sleep
Reposing in tawny beds
Autumn leaves at rest
Thanks so much for taking time to read these selected verses from MY MAINE, Haiku Through the Seasons. I look forward to hearing your thoughts about them as I continue work on the collection. Wishing everyone a blessed and beautiful autumn. ~Bette A. Stevens, Maine author

Thank you! Your four seasons are so different from my two. But I love the leaves on the ground, the gift of soil from the trees on the path of transformation.

My husband just asked if I wanted to move to Maine (we’re looking for our retirement home) and my first thought was, too cold! But this reminds me there’s a lot more to it.
Nice.

So much more, Jacqui… Winters do get COLD, but the wonders of nature warm the heart in every season. Of course, being retired now, we don’t have to go out in inclement weather! We’ve lived in NY, CA and VA, but my heart was always in Maine. The pace of life here is slow (peaceful) and welcoming (pristine) –guess that’s why they call it Vacationland. Glad to be back be to the place we call home. ❤ Thanks so much for stopping by for a visit. xo

You are very talented Bette. Will the Haiku’s be printed on photo pages of Maine? Your beautiful photos give your Haikus a complimentary visual aspect for those of us who are foreigners to Maine 😉
Blessings,
Jennifer

Crispy, crunchy leaves. I used to have to rake them all the time, no now. Beautiful poem. here in Ga, you have to go north to the mountains to see really beautiful colors. And the Master’s hand made me think of the poem by Myra Brook Welch, I’ll post it sometime this month.

Thanks so much, Mae. Spring, summer, winter and fall, MY MAINE has it all. I’ve spent 40+ years here in the place that holds my heart. After having spent years in CA, VA and NY (where I was born), traversing our beautiful country by southern, mid and northern routes and driving Atlantic and Pacific coast, I feel blessed to be retired in my heartland here in Maine. I’ll be spending the month of November, getting MY MAINE finished and hope you’ll enjoy my journey through the seasons. ❤ Blessings and love… xo

Bette, my husband and I are planning to visit Maine next September. We’ve been looking at Portland, Freeport and Bar Harbor but he has a co-worker who has a place about a half hour outside of Bar Harbor on a lake. We may end up going there. I think I will fall in love with your state when I visit. It’s been on my bucket list for a long time (hubby has been to Presque Isle, but many years ago). Very exciting about MY MAINE. I know I’ll love getting lost the pages!

I love the transitions. My favorite verse is
Skycastle ensigns—

The coming tempest.
Autumn is my favorite season. I must admit this year’s autumn is a bit of a disappointment with all the rain that we have had, but I am still hoping to see a bit more color before the first snowfall.

Thanks so much, Barbara. We’ve been blessed with another glorious season of color here in Maine, but our autumn glow is fast fading and we’re in for a rainy week or so before the real snow works its magic. ❤ Three cheers to our awesome autumns! xo
