Monarch butterflies offer an amazing view into the intricate nature of the wild. Their scientific name—Danaus Plexippus— Greek for “Sleepy Transformation,” gets part of the story right, but not the epic whole. Monarch butterflies embark on an amazing migratory phenomenon as they have the ability to hibernate and metamorphose.  International conservation efforts to protect and restore monarch habitat are ongoing. These efforts may help improve the near-endangered/endangered status of the species; but we, as ordinary citizens, can easily help the monarch butterfly recovery right in our own backyards and gardens.

    Hi Bette: we are looking at a trip to Bar Harbour this spring depending on the conditions of my 95 year old mother and my wife’s 95 year old father. I hope you’re doing well.

      Sounds wonderful, Jim! Recommend early May in Maine… Dan and I are well and keeping warm by the wood stove. Our first Nor’easter predicted for Saturday. We’ve been spending lots of time here at the farmstead since the pandemic began. Hope that you and Ruth and your parents are well and warm this winter too! Have a lovely week!

    Happy new year Bette. My father talked longingly about the monarch as the only butterfly known to migrate across the Atlantic and reach England. He loved the idea that one day he’d see one. It didn’t happe at least not live but he organised a tour of national butterfly collection at thr Natural History museum when I was about ten and there were some examples, often Victorian. Such an amazing creature.
