Thank You, Mama
Poem by Bette A. Stevens
Thank you dearest Mama
For the lane you’ve led me down
The light you shone before me
Still helps me traverse on
Climbing formidable summits
Or facing storming skies
I know that you’re still with me
Watching through the Father’s eyes
I can always feel the sunshine
As your smile lights the way
Love truly unconditional
I’m thankful every day
Mama left us, bound for her heavenly home, in April of 2008. Mama’s strength of character, poise and wit—and her unconditional love— live on within all those whose lives she touched.
Thank you, dearest Mama…
Love,
Bette

Bette, that was so beautiful. And the photos are simply lovely, too. Thank you so much for sharing. My mother went to her Heavenly home in 2012. My Dad had been there a long time before her (1975) and I often imagine them looking down on me. I always say what a reunion we’ll have when my time comes!

Thanks for sharing a bit of your story with me, Gayl. It reminds me of one of my favorite things I loved doing–Mama was a wonderful artist and a creative soul. We would draw paperdolls and design their clothing. Paperdolls were one of my favorites right into my early teen years. Eventually I took a sketching course at the University at age 48 and a whole new world of beauty was open to me. I have three of Mama’s paintings and have passed a few along to each of my daughters. ❤ Thanks for jogging those special memories… Wishing you a beautiful and blessed Mother's Day, dear friend. xo

A beautiful poem in memory of your mother, Bette… still with you in so many ways ‘As your smile lights the way’. Her father has the most Swedish of names … was he born there and later moved to America? Your mother looks stunning, like a film star! Xx

Grandpa’s family moved to America in mid 1800s (Kansas); Grandma Anna Marie Gustufson Sjoberg Brandel Lindgren was sent to America (Kansas) to live with her father’s brother and sister-in-law in 1892 at age of seven. I should really get researching and write their story. IF ONLY I had a first-hand account; but the Lindgren’s didn’t even share their story with their 10 children who are no longer with us. I know bits and pieces, but know there is a great story to be told. ❤ Mama was beautiful indeed–inside and out! How lucky you and I are to have our wonderful Mamas. Blessings and love to you and yours, dear Annika! xoxoxo

Bette, you’re right … your family history is an epic saga in its own right. Imagine being only seven and sent away for away, so far away. The personal circumstances must have been so dire they saw this as the only hope of survival and future for the little girl. Between a quarter to a third of the population emigrated in a very short space of time owing to starvation and poverty. I must say your grandma has the most wonderful long name.
