Monarch butterflies offer an amazing view into the intricate nature of the wild. Their scientific name—Danaus Plexippus— Greek for “Sleepy Transformation,” gets part of the story right, but not the epic whole. Monarch butterflies embark on an amazing migratory phenomenon as they have the ability to hibernate and metamorphose.  International conservation efforts to protect and restore monarch habitat are ongoing. These efforts may help improve the near-endangered/endangered status of the species; but we, as ordinary citizens, can easily help the monarch butterfly recovery right in our own backyards and gardens.

    I have just discovered your blog Bette, and I am enjoying it so far. Though poetry is not my photo, it really does feel like you have a way with poetry and haikus 🙂 Your passion for monarch butterflies also shines through. Here in Australia we only get a handful of these species in our gardens, but they always light up any place when they are around. Hope you have had a good start to the year, and looking forward to seeing more from you this year 🙂

    I’ve been so sad reading about the lower numbers of Monarchs in our world. When I lived in the SF bay area, in the early spring my friend and I would walk around Belvedere Island to a tiny street rarely known about, and there, on a smallish busy tree, fluttered hundreds and hundreds of Monarchs. Every year. What a gift that sighting was every year!

    Loved the New Years poem Bette. Monarch’s have always interested me. As a young girl I’d walk to school through the milk weed and study the caterpillars and pupae. I always say I want to go see the migration near Santa Cruz but never make it. May this will be the year. Hope the New Year is magical for you Bette:)

      Thanks so much for your lovely note, Denise. Reminded me so much of my early childhood days when we lived in Santa Clara and I was mesmerized by the glittering wings of the monarchs. I would capture them in glass jars during the day and let them fly before dusk. It was a magical time in my childhood. I remember glorious day trips over roller-coaster-like roads to Santa Cruz too. Those early years is when my love of nature began. Oh, those magical memories. May the magic live on for us all! ❤ xo
