The Fourth of July – America’s declaration of independence.  I teach children about the American flag, and patriotism.  It’s important.  Best of all, children often lead the way.  Their interests are the springboard for the best learning.

The Fourth of July is far more than the Boston Pops concert, fireworks, and a barbeque.  It’s remembering our freedom, and how we got there.

Here is a post on what happened at school.  It is celebrating America.  This is the real start to teaching children about the Fourth of July.

    This entry reminds me how differently I reacted to Citizenship teachings as a student. In Elem. school I embraced the powerful “hands on” approach to learning as shown by the quilt example you gave. In contrast, throughout middle and high school, Civics became a monotonous recital of facts from the textbook or perhaps not taught at all.

      As an ESL/SDAI teacher in Middle School, beautiful picture books like THIS LAND IS OUR LAND was perfect for interdisiciplinary learning and my students in grades 6,7.8 loved the music. My fourth and fifth graders too! ❤ Thanks for sharing, Jim!
